About
the Initiative
An international initiative in Religion, Conflict,
and Peacebuilding is central to Emory’s university-wide strategic
initiative on Religions and the Human Spirit.
Emory’s distinctive approach to addressing religious conflict
is to train scholar-practitioners to work with religious leaders,
lay people, peacebuilding professionals, and non-governmental organizations
to draw on the resources of religions for conflict resolution and
peacebuilding.
Too
often we only hear about the uses of religion to legitimize violence
rather than examples – historical and contemporary – of
religious people working together. Emory has the resources and expertise
to concentrate on practices within religions themselves in order to
address the causes of conflict between and within religions and to
promote peaceful societies.
Lecture Series
The ethnic and religious violence that characterizes contemporary
life calls for new ways of thinking and writing. As a response, Emory
University has begun a major new initiative in Religion, Conflict,
and Peacebuilding. To help inaugurate this effort, the university
is holding a series of public lectures related to these themes. The
series includes a distinguished lineup of scholar-practitioners, each
of whom has made significant contributions worldwide in the field
of religion, conflict and peacebuilding.
The goal is to invite these
experts to share their insights with the Emory and Atlanta community
as the university embarks on a new phase of scholarship, research
and outreach. As an institution deeply concerned with the growing
challenges related to religious conflict and violence, Emory is proud
to host these scholars as the first phase of marshalling its resources
for exploring and fostering new possibilities for sustained peacebuilding.
